BackpackX workshops

Here’s a first glimpse of the workshops we carried out with our partners in Pakistan!

We’re really thankful to Zindagi Trust, British Council, LUMS and Google’s GDG Kolachi for working with us and helping make BackpackX a reality! 📚

The video shows some of the amazing children we met and gives a taster of the workshops we carried out. These workshops included an introduction to Women Rise and to VR technology followed by a presentation from the team on climate change, the subject of our first VR360 animated short film. The students were then able to have a screening of BackpackX which they thoroughly enjoyed! We finished up with a question and feedback session. 🎒

Keep an eye out for more videos coming soon!

Qissa: What’s been happening

The year will soon be coming to a close 😭. But, before we get there, let’s take a look back on all the fantastic stories we’ve had on Qissa over the last couple of months! 👏

We spoke with the incredible artist and activist and founder of Fearless Collective, Shilo Shiv Suleman. She is an absolute legend! 💪 We also spoke with multi-disciplinary scholar Jasmine Gui and learnt all about juggling the various different elements of a multi-hyphenated career.

We introduced some of you to Indian astronaut Kalpana Chawla. Clocking up over 30 days in space, she was definitely a boundary-breaking woman!

We’ve recently celebrated all forms of culture, from ground-breaking book The Sex Lives of African Women by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah and movies Booksmart and Sisterhood, to musical icon Fairuz and an exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London! 📕🎞️🎶🖼️

Speaking about incredibly difficult topics, we had a really moving and fascinating conversation with author and activist Winnie M Li. Make sure you check out her incredible books, Complicit and Dark Chapter!

Up soon we’ll be giving you an insight into our fantastic trip to Pakistan, where we launched BackpackX, our VR educational initiative. You don’t want to miss this one!! You can read all these stories and more on our website. 💖

IT’S OUR SECOND ANNIVERSARY!

Dear WR fam, Women Rise is officially two years old!!! ✨

We can’t believe how far we’ve come. From our first five followers (which we are still so proud of!) to selling out the Women Rise art collection. From talking in our living room about maybe launching an art collection to talking on stage and representing WR at global events including Instagram Creator Week at Tate to Veecon and SXSW! Along the way we’ve worked with INCREDIBLE partners, been part of amazing initiatives, worked with organisations we’ve dreamt about working with and have some of the best community members that anyone can ever meet! The impact, the conversations, the art, it’s all with us!

We have continued to make an impact, with partnerships, with our storytelling platform #qissa and with our VR educational initiative, BackpackX. 📚✏️

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you, our amazing community, for your continued support over the last two years. We seriously couldn’t have done it without you! We hope you will stay with us as we continue to progress with our mission of championing social justice, celebrating women and girls and campaigning for girls’ education!

We have been through so much together and to celebrate it all, we have put together a video highlighting some of our favourite moments. I hope you enjoy watching it and reliving the moments of joy, impact and importance with us all.☀️

We’re SO incredibly grateful right now! @everyone ☀️🎊

We have created a video for you to celebrate it all! ✨🥰 https://x.com/womenrisenft/status/1728812847910838617?s=46&;t=VYjAI7IbxxrEK4xbSmEnFQ

Digital postcard from Pakistan!

It’s good to be back home after so long and especially for the work we are here to carry out. 🎨 📚

We spent the past few days with some amazing students in the city of Karachi at Zindagi Trust schools. This is a part of the Women Rise education initiative called BackpackX . The response we have received from students, teachers, and overall school’s staff that got to experience the BackPackX VR Curriculum has been extremely positive and heartwarming. A huge shoutout to the teams involved and to @Aski | Women Rise Team for leading it so beautifully!

Our current curriculum is focused on Climate Change and as many of you may know, Pakistan was hit by some of the worst floods in history just last year where one-third of the country was under water and over 30 million people were impacted across the country. 🍃 🌎

Most of the students and educators we have worked with had never experienced VR before and they were overjoyed with the VR experience while also sharing that they found the subject matter to be extremely insightful and captivating.

Though everything that we do at Women Rise is close to our heart, this initiative is most special because we have launched this in our home country of Pakistan. With each activation, we try to do something different and more impactful than before. As some of you may remember, earlier this year we worked with Girls Who Code to create an incredible art studio in collaboration with Synchrony Bank during GWC’s code fair. As we are about to reach our 2nd anniversary and the end of 2023 approaching, we will continue to campaign for girls’ education creatively while also collaborating with amazing students, educators, and communities.

Thank you and so much more is coming

Maliha’s Solo exhibition Ticket GIVEAWAY

We’re thrilled to invite you to Maliha’s first solo exhibition at Frameless London this Friday, 13th October during Frieze London.

To celebrate we’re giving away 10 complimentary tickets to the Women Rise community for an after-hour preview of Maliha’s latest work with food and music by Soho Radio’s Nabihah Iqbal!

The exhibition will showcase some of Maliha’s best-known work including her latest animation titled ‘Shifting Shadows: A New Horizon’. In an immersive experience, Abidi’s work takes its viewers on a boundary-breaking journey. Shifting Shadows is a meticulously crafted animated masterpiece that challenges prevailing norms for women in public realms, centred on realities observed from across Pakistan, South Asia and beyond.

Please complete the form below for a chance to win a free ticket. Form closes in 24 hours and the winners will be notified by tomorrow evening via email. We hope to see our wonderful Women Rise community at the exhibition.

https://d5088sosksc.typeform.com/to/p56p0Hpz

About the exhibition
As you step into this luminous projection, the narrative unfolds. Abidi delicately unravels the gendered fabric, shedding light on the scarcity of women in public spaces. She reveals the enigma of barren public parks and chai parlours, where safety concerns keep women from being present. Abidi paints an alternate reality where brown femininity weaves harmoniously into the outdoors, offering a hopeful tomorrow. A tomorrow where reclamation can take place. "Shifting Shadows: A New Horizon" challenges societal shadows and invites us to envision public spaces where every woman can feel safe. Until then, we imagine.

Shifting Shadows : A New Horizon will drop on SuperRare on the 10th of October and the show will open on the 13th October.

The exhibition will run at Frameless Lates from 14th Oct – 23rd Nov. Book tickets and find more details here: https://frameless.com/frameless-lates/

Discord Update

GM WR fam! A small announcement. As you know, we love our community and are so grateful to be able to come on Discord and speak with you all every day - we love hearing about your lives, your work and your interests! Thank you for sharing with us.

However… we're a small team that puts everything into this project and, after almost two years of keeping Discord open 24/7, we would like to implement a new schedule. From this week onwards, we'll be turning Discord to read-only during the weekend to give our team a little break from social media. If you need us over the weekend, then you can submit the contact form on our website which we monitor actively. We'll continue to be on Discord Monday-Friday and hope that more of you than ever will continue to celebrate, joke, support and chat with us (and each other!) going forward!

What You Might Have Missed at Qissa

GM! We’ve had a busy couple of months over at Qissa! Let’s recap all the fantastic stories and people that we have celebrated recently. 🎉

July and August saw us championing South Asian Heritage Month with some AMAZING interviews! We spoke with business guru Zara Saleem, Founder of Delhicious, and artist Misha Japanwala. What fantastic conversations! We also heard from three incredible artists from Bangladesh, Iran and Sri Lanka! What a privilege to be able to learn about all their different art practices - we are so grateful to these icons! And speaking of icons, we wrote a short introduction to Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil, for those who haven’t yet experienced her work. You’ll love it! 💛

For all our sport fans - we profiled the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League, the first ever league for girls in the North of Pakistan . We still cannot get over that scenery! And if you’re more interested in swimming or F1 racing, we have those covered too with our round-up of incredible women in sport. ⚽️🏎️

We absolutely fell in love with the writing of Forough Farrokhzad, a poet from mid-twentieth-century Iran. I mean - ‘my thirst has scalded your body like fire’. Seriously GORGEOUS! 📖

Shining a spotlight on Women in STEAM is our absolute favourite thing to do. And it’s doubly exciting when we get to find out more about emerging technologies that are making the world a better place! 💻

And speaking of exciting tech developments… We finally got to share news of our latest launch, BackpackX! We are so excited to be bringing storytelling and technology together in the education space! 🎒

Keep following Qissa to stay updated.

BackpackX - Women Rise’s Biggest Initiative Yet

Women Rise has always used art to champion girls’ education. Providing equal access to education ensures that we create a more equitable, exciting and economically-secure future for all! Since the beginning of Women Rise, we have contributed towards and collaborated with exceptional organisations focused on girls’ education such as Girls Who Code, Malala Fund, The Pad Project, Girl Effect, SOL Afghanistan and many more! We are incredibly proud to be announcing our NEWEST VENTURE into the education space with the launch of BackpackX! 🎒

BackpackX is a new VR education initiative with a focus on educating children from marginalised communities in regions where the educational systems are broken or non-existent. Using the power of art and innovative technology, BackpackX will bring immersive experiences and educational content that inspires children while learning. Through this experience it will also introduce young children to the exciting new world of Metaverse and Web 3.👩‍💻

As emerging technologies like AR/VR/Metaverse go mainstream in the western world, we must not leave behind marginalised communities. Large corporations will focus on rolling out these technologies in the advanced economies. We aspire to do the same for those in the vulnerable societies and hope that you will continue to be part of our mission. ☀️

The first release from BackpackX will be a short animated film where children can learn about the impacts of climate change and what solutions are needed. The film brings multiple Women Rise NFT characters to life, which is a further extension and celebration of Women Rise IP.

We are so excited to say that the launch will be taking place in Pakistan, our home country and a place that holds such a special space in our hearts! We can’t wait for the launch and want to thank our entire WR community for your endless support!!✨ 👏

What's been happening on Qissa this Summer

☀️Summer continues and as we’re well into the second half of the year already, let’s recap all the stories that we have celebrated on Qissa so far this summer!🌻

🎵First we heard about the fantastic Jerusalem Youth Chorus, an organisation working to bring together youth from Palestine and Israel and encouraging them to share their stories with one another. Music is a powerful form of ART!

📺Moving on to the screen, we spoke with actress Aoi Okuyama, a very talented individual, about her career, adventures in Japan, Harry Potter (any Potter heads in the house?) and future plans. We are so looking forward to seeing what she does next!

📚We have established that we're a book loving family here at Qissa & Women Rise! We feel inspired by authors and stories, such as Pluto Press’ great Kurdish Women’s Stories.

❤️We also did a deep-dive into the positive impact of Poverty Reduction Schemes around the world.

🎨Who doesn’t love going to see brilliant works of art on a bright summer day? We are so grateful to our friends at Art Fund for partnering with us to showcase all the incredible exhibitions, galleries and museums that the UK has to offer! We are certainly making the most of our National Art Pass now! And while we’re talking about art and artists, how about our incredible interviews with photography research project Fast Forward and textile artist Joke Amusan?

🗣️And have we mentioned how excited we are about South Asian Heritage Month?? We interviewed the amazing poet Anoushka Bradley-Gammanpila, and we will continue to share amazing stories, exciting interviews & bring you more great content to celebrate representation and ART! 🙌🏼

Qissa continues to amplify stories from around the world

We’re entering our fifth month of Qissa! Let’s take a look at all the voices that we have amplified on Women Rise & Qissa since the launch in January 2023

As you know, we can’t get enough of celebrating women in STEM, whether through WR art or partnering with Girls Who Code ! Keeping that in mind, we started strong with our first article which was about the amazing Afghan Girls Robotics Team! They're such an inspiration!

And how about our partnership with Camfed!? Did you know that Camfed’s first ever donation from the NFT space was made by Women Rise? Since then we’ve had an incredible relationship. From campaigning for girls' education together to amplifying stories of women leaders.

Women Rise has the best community and partners who continue to support our mission! One of those is Feminist , a community of more than 6 million people where, together, we highlighted South Asian women artists and curators and dug deeper into the rich South Asian art scene!! ✨🎨 This was such an important project for us as a South Asian artist-led organisation ourselves!

We brought you powerful voices 📖 and interviews with authors, including the lovely Palestinian-American author Hannah Moushabeck!

And for those whose stories matter just as much, but due to safety concerns they had to remain anonymous, we launched Fearless Postcards, a simple concept that shows the extraordinary bravery of women from around the world and allows us to celebrate them. 👏

We also got to sit down with so many inspirational women, from Mbolatiana Raveloarimisa to Malala to Fathi Mohamed Ahmed, Chief Editor at Bilan Media, and Shabana Basij-Rasikh, founder of SOLA Afghanistan!!

We are so proud of Qissa and we cannot wait to bring you more and more voices from around the world! 🌟🌟

“Cryptocurrency was founded on the idea of freeing money from the old systems of monetary control, with all the gender inequality inherent in them. Yet the burgeoning networks of Web3, including both crypto and NFT trading, seem at risk of repeating the same striking disparities. Current estimates show only five percent of those who work in crypto are women, and an equally small proportion of NFT sales go to women artists. In this video, we meet some of the women founders, creators, and artists who are fighting to change those statistics and shape a more equitable future for Web3.”- Vice News

QISSA behind-the-scenes

Dear Women Rise fam,

With one week to go until launch, we thought we'd share a little bit more information about the motivation behind starting Qissa!! ♥️

'Qissa is a place where we aim to give a voice to women from around the world. We want to hear their stories, amplify them, and share them globally. We will cover difficult topics (because being a woman anywhere in the world has its challenges!) but we also want to be a place for celebration and positivity. Women are doing amazing things, daily, on both global and micro levels, and we want to highlight it all.'

QISSA is coming

Dear Women Rise fam,

We've been teasing you over the last couple of days - so now it’s time to share the news.

We are THRILLED to say we will be launching QISSA on Thursday 5th January!!!

What is QISSA? QISSA, meaning 'story' in Urdu, will embrace the power of art for storytelling to amplify diverse voices of women and girls from around the world.

Diverse stories of excellence and joy from various parts of the world are often left untold and when they do get recognition in the media, they are often presented in a negative light. This creates misrepresentation of cultures, countries and communities.

We want to continue the work of celebrating women that I began through my art and books. In my second book, Rise, I wrote; “Growing up, I rarely came across positive stories of women who looked like me or who I could identify with, culturally or otherwise. I wanted to create Rise so that other women of colour could find themselves in a book. I wanted to honour these incredible female scientists, activists, leaders, and artists who have worked both behind the scenes and under public scrutiny to make the world a better place.”

This is the motivation with which we are starting QISSA - to take back control of our own narrative.

QISSA will celebrate and represent women in the arts, sciences, sports, activism, Web3 and the Metaverse, as well as spread awareness about girls’ education and women’s rights in line with Women Rise’s mission.

To hear all these incredible stories, make sure you’re following @QissaTheStory on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok to be kept up to date.

From 5th of January , you’ll be able to find Qissa’s dedicated section on the new Women Rise website that’s coming soon

Dear Women Rise fam,

It's a beautiful Friday and TGIF indeed. We have three wonderful pieces of news to share with you so here we go.

🗞 Business Insider feature: We have just been featured in the Business Insider article where they talked about 53 crypto/web3 start ups as recommended by VCs. We are grateful to be one of the very few NFT projects featured in the article and it's great to see that the article shines a light on Women Rise's long term vision of going beyond the NFT space. It's all thanks to our wonderful and supportive community that we continue to make our mark.

📚 Rising Women Club: In conversation with Shabana Basij Rasikh, an amazing activist rising for Afghan Girls' education. I was honoured to have a virtual sit down with Shabana and talk about the state of Afghan girls' education, her own journey of getting an education and how she created SOLA, a girls' boarding school that's one of its kind and relocated to Rwanada during the political turmoil of 2021. SOL Afghanistan was one of the schools we conrtibuted to as part of our roadmap. Shabana is someone that inspired me and we are so excited to share her story through the Women Rise platform soon. Full conversation will be posted soon.

❤️ Chicago Bulls Drop: Chicago Bulls posted their official annoucement yesterday for their Coinbase drop alongside the artist list who will recreatinng their iconic logo. I am grateful and proud to be one of the artists and cannot wait to share the art work inspired by Women Rise collection. The drop will be live on the 22nd of September and will be a 24 hour auction.

Thank you for all your support fam @everyone .

Love, Maliha. 📚☀️💖
